The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has recently approved the listing of ETFs that invest in the cryptocurrency Ether, a move facilitated by thorough reviews of applications from Nasdaq, Cboe Global Markets, and the New York Stock Exchange.

These spot Ethereum ETFs align with the requirements of the Securities Exchange Act, although the SEC must still approve individual asset manager applications before trading can begin.

This development comes on the heels of the SEC’s cautious approval of bitcoin ETFs and has been well received by the crypto community and asset managers eager to launch these funds, such as VanEck. Spot Ethereum ETFs offer investors a way to gain exposure to Ether without directly purchasing or managing the digital asset.

This is significant as Ether underpins the Ethereum network, a platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications, and is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

This is because of Baltisee Virtual Unit’s non-custodial business model. We do not store assets on behalf of our customers unless requested to do so. Any crypto you buy at our kiosks or online is sent and stored securely in our customers’ own wallets. They control their own assets and we have no access to it.

Do I need a cryptocurrency wallet?

Yes, in order to buy cryptocurrencies at our ATMs, online, or through our OTC desk, you must have a cryptocurrency wallet, a digital bank account that allows you to store, send, and receive cryptocurrency securely. Your cryptocurrency wallet will have a wallet address, a 32 to 64-character-long alphanumeric string which is a unique identifier used to receive and send cryptocurrencies. What wallet address types can be sent to through Baltisee Virtual Unit?

Bitcoin: Addresses starting with 1, 3, or bc1.
Litecoin: Addresses starting with L, M, ltc1.
Ethereum: Addresses starting with 0x.

What is the maximum purchase limit?

ATM: The transaction limit every 24 hours is $20,000. Any purchases over $1,000 requires KYC verification.
Online: The transaction limit is $5,000 per person per month. All purchases require an initial KYC verification.
OTC: There is no transaction limit. The OTC desk exists to help you safely complete very large transactions.

What is KYC identity verification and why do I need to do it?

KYC, or “Know Your Customer,” is a process in which cryptocurrency platforms verify the identity of users. It is a requirement to prevent fraud, money laundering, and illicit activities. Through the validation of your information and documents, KYC helps maintain security, regulatory compliance, and the integrity of the crypto ecosystem.

Baltisee Virtual Unit is legally required to collect customer information for KYC verification, as we are a registered Money Services Business (MSB) and are regulated by FINTRAC.

KYC verification is required for ATM transactions over $1,000 and all online portal transactions. This one-time process, completed for your Baltisee Virtual Unit ID, enables subsequent transactions without further verification.

When will I receive my coins after submitting a purchase?

For purchases made at an ATM or on our online portal, typically you will see your purchased cryptocurrency appear in your digital wallet in 1-2 hours, but this will vary due to blockchain confirmation times. If you do not receive your coins within 24 hours, please contact our support team at support@baltisee.org or 1-855-499-1149.

If I changed my phone number, how can I connect my account?

If you have completed KYC verification using your phone number, that phone number becomes linked to your Baltisee Virtual Unit ID. If you change your phone number, please contact our support team to update your contact information – ensuring you’re able to make future purchases.

Why does my digital wallet display a different amount from my purchase?

Ensure your wallet’s currency setting matches the purchased currency (CAD). Most wallets default to USD. Additionally, verify the cryptocurrency amount aligns with your purchased cryptocurrency value, not the dollar value. Finally, note that Baltisee Virtual Unit applies a transaction fee, causing a slightly higher rate compared to online market prices.

I think I am a victim of fraudulent activity. What should I do?

Firstly, make sure to never send cryptocurrency to anyone you do not know. If you have received a threat or suspicious request, contact the police or our support team right away.

If you feel that you have completed a transaction due to fraud:

Contact Baltisee Virtual Unit’s support team to get more information about your transaction.
Contact your local police or RCMP to file a report.
Send Baltisee Virtual Unit your police report file number.
Report the fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Better Business Bureau or Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.

What do I need to buy cryptocurrency at the ATM?

Be sure to bring the following for a seamless transaction:

Mobile phone: You must complete SMS verification through your phone number before making a purchase.
Cash: Our ATMs only accept Canadian cash – specifically only Canadian bills, not coins.
Crypto Wallet: Your digital wallet allows you to store, send, and receive cryptocurrency securely.
Photo ID: For purchases over $1,000, you must complete KYC verification by uploading an image of a government-issued photo identification.

What payment methods are accepted at the ATM?

Baltisee Virtual Unit ATMs only accept Canadian cash – specifically only Canadian bills, not coins. Our ATMs do not accept foreign currencies, debit, or credit.

Why isn't my wallet address QR code scanning?

Make sure you’ve chosen the “Receive” option and selected the correct cryptocurrency. Adjust your phone’s brightness to the highest setting. Consider rotating your phone sideways. Position the QR code under the scanner for the ATM to read accurately.

How do I sell cryptocurrency at an ATM?

Carefully follow the following steps to sell cryptocurrency at a Baltisee Virtual Unit ATM:

If selling more than $1,000, register your account at kyc.badgercoin.com
Type in your mobile phone number on the keypad. Enter the SMS code sent to your phone.
Select the type of coin you will be selling to Baltisee Virtual Unit. Choose the amount of cash you’d like to withdraw.
Scan the QR code displayed on screen with your cryptocurrency wallet.
Ensure you send the exact amount of cryptocurrency requested to the QR code displayed. Failure to do so will delay your transaction.
Select “Complete Transaction” on the ATM. All withdrawal attempts print a receipt, even if you did not send us anything. Read the receipt to check if your transaction was successful.
Wait for 1+ confirmation in your cryptocurrency wallet. You will receive a text that your cash is ready, which can take between 30 minutes to a few hours. Come back to the same Bitcoin ATM you initiated the transaction from once you receive the confirmation. You cannot redeem your cash at a different Baltisee Virtual Unit ATM. Redemption codes are valid for 30 days, so you can return to the ATM when convenient.
Select “Redeem” on the ATM. Type in your mobile phone number on the keypad. Enter your redemption code.
Cash will be dispensed immediately from the bottom-right slot.

What do transaction statuses mean?

In the Baltisee Virtual Unit Online Portal, you can track all your transactions and their statuses. There are three possible statuses:

Payment Pending: Awaiting credit or debit payment to process.
Payment Received: We have received your payment. Your cryptocurrency should be sent to you within 2 hours, but this will vary due to blockchain confirmation times. If you do not receive your coins within 24 hours, please contact our support team at support@baltisee.org or 1-855-499-1149.
Wallet Transfer Success: Cryptocurrency has been delivered to your wallet.
Payment Canceled: Order expired, payment not received, and cryptocurrency was not sent. Create a new order.
